Woodland

There is very little extensive woodland in Pembrokeshire because much of it was cleared before the end of the 19th century.

Since then, some woodland has been planted commercially, and some of the steep sided valleys have naturally regenerated with trees. There are several small pockets of ancient woodland which remain intact, all of which are now protected.

Ancient Woodland sites have been continuously wooded since at least 1600AD and have diverse, stable communities of wild plants and animals. Each wood has its own particular communities, influenced by factors such as small scale variations in soils, wetness, shade and past and present land management practices.
