Popton Fort

Built on a commanding headland overlooking Angle Bay and Milford Haven, Popton Fort was completed in August 1865 at a cost of just over £76,700.

The casemates contained eleven nine-inch, 12 ton RML guns, and there were also six seven-inch Moncrieff guns in their pits above the casemates. Other armaments included an open battery consisting of a ten-inch, 18 ton RML gun together with nine nine-inch 12 ton RML guns, and a separate battery comprising two seven-inch RBL guns. The armament was never brought up to modern standard and the fort was abandoned early in the 20th century and gradually fell into decay. It was purchased by the BP Oil Company in 1959 and thoroughly restored, with the hexagonal barracks building being used as offices and stores. The fort and casemates are now the property of Texaco.
