West Pennar
This was the site of the first heavy anti-aircraft battery built to defend the Milford Haven waterway.
July 1946 - No18 Barrage balloon Site, Brownslate
Originally armed with two guns in sand-bagged emplacements, the battery was later rebuilt to mount four 3.7 inch MkII guns. The camp was situated within the grounds of West Pennar Farm and the brick-built command post and gun emplacements were situated on the crest of the hill. During 1944, the guns were withdrawn to the south coast of England to be deployed against the V1 ‘Doodlebug’ missiles as part of ‘Operation Diver’. To avoid disclosing this fact to German reconnaissance aircraft, dummy wooden guns were installed in the emplacements. All the structures on the site were demolished when Pembroke Power Station was built in the 1960s.
