Warren

Alongside West Lane, Warren, can be seen a number of buildings, some mounded with earth. This was RAF Warren.

RAF Warren (AMES 70), was a WW2 Chain Home radar station which was defended by a ‘Z’ battery manned by 130 AA Bty (Z) RA. The ‘Z’ Bty was armed with two-inch antiaircraft rockets codenamed ‘Unrotated Projectiles’ or ‘UPs’. A mound (SR 926 977) near the Range Viewing Tower on the road from Warren to Castlemartin was once a receiver block for the radar station, while a concrete weight for anchoring the radar ‘curtain’ array can also be seen in an adjacent field. Nearby Warren School had to be closed due to fears that an enemy raid on the site would endanger the pupils. Above Warren Farm was a searchlight battery manned by 494 Bty 77 S/L Regt RA which was attacked by enemy aircraft during WW2 (SR 933 977)
