The smallest city in Britain has been a place of pilgrimage since the Middle Ages, when two pilgrimages to St David's equalled one to Rome. David, the Welsh patron saint, established a monastery here in the sixth century which flourished despite Viking raids.

Following the Norman conquest, David was canonised and a cathedral was built on the site of his monastery.

This was enlarged and embellished over the centuries to create the present magnificent building.  Alongside the cathedral in the valley of the River Alun are the impressive ruins of the 14th century St David's Bishop's Palace.
