Ripperston Cross
The large brick building near the crossroads, still showing traces of camouflage paint, is one of the best preserved WW2 ‘Happidromes’ in Britain.
This was a Ground Control Intercept radar station, and the ‘Happidrome’ was the operations block where the radar operators and controllers worked to track down and intercept night-raiding enemy aircraft. The building which housed the stand-by generator is also still standing. A building near the farm to the south of the crossroads was once part of a High Frequency Direction Finding station, HFDF being a navigation system for aircraft.
