New Inn Farm
SN083 029 On November 11, 1943, a Whitley aircraft serial number LA882 from Stanton Harcourt was engaged on a cross-country exercise.
While flying over the St Florence area the aircraft encountered a violent thuderstorm. The Whitley was struck by lightning and was seen to dive steeply and crash near New Inn Farm. The six-man crew all died in the crash; they were - Sgt R Curnow, F/O M Watson, Sgt W Oakley, Sgt G Crick, Sgt L Coleman, Sgt I Hill. Local people can remember two other aircraft coming down in fields around the village, one of them crashing near the top end of Copybush Lane, the other coming down in a field on the left hand side of Hoyle's Mouth road, probably on land belonging to Carswell Farm.
