East Popton bombing decoy

A single-storey, brick-built rectangular building within the Texaco refinery site was originally a ‘night shelter’ used by the crew of a Quartz Light/Quartz Fire (QL/QF) bombing decoy.

This was a sophisticated decoy system designed to give the appearance of Pembroke Dock at night, thus fooling enemy aircraft into bombing the sparsely-populated area around Pwllcrochan. Electric lighting was used to give different effects – light shining through slipped slates on roofs; doors opening and closing; spilled light from poorly blacked-out windows; masked headlamps of cars; dim permitted lighting such as could be seen at the dockyard flying boat base and at the station. If the decoy lights attracted any bombing, the fire displays would then come into play to attract further bombing. These fire displays were also sophisticated, representing the effect of bombing on a town - slow, glowing fires, flaring fires and spluttering flames. The surviving structure has a central doorway accessing a corridor which permits access to the two rooms, one housing the generator and the other one the control room/ shelter. Nowadays the building is used as a store.
