The Tower House

Although it is sometimes known as the Old Rectory or Castle, the house gets its name from its medieval tower construction more commonly found in Ireland and Scotland.

Tower houseIt is thought that the Tower House was built in the late 14th century or early 15th century by the de Shirburn family. The Tower House was well fortified and set within a moated enclosure. The main entrance was originally on the first floor, via a drawbridge. The ground floor had a vaulted ceiling and was most likely used for storage. On the upper three floors are a number of single living chambers each with a fireplace. Remains of further buildings were found behind the existing farm buildings. The Tower House was restored in 1999 and is now open to the public.
