In August 1973 the 11,000 Ton tanker Donna Marika became grounded at Longberry Point on Lindsway beach.  It was full of explosive aviation spirit and being battered by a violent storm.  The crew of 38 spent a terrifying six hours before they were rescued. Many villagers were evacuated and most spent at least two nights away from their homes. The bell from the Donna Marika was presented to the village and can be seen at the Sports and Social Club.
