Carew Castle
The original Norman castle at Carew has traditionally been seen as built by Gerald de Windsor, a Norman who came with Arnulph de Montgomery the first Norman Earl of Pembroke.

His descendants were responsible for further building in the Middle Ages. The Princess Nest whom Gerald de Windsor married about the year 1100 was the daughter of the last Welsh ruler in this part of Wales. One of their children, Angharad was mother of Gerald de Barri - Giraldus Cambrensis - Gerald of Wales an important cleric and scholar. His account of his journey through Wales in 1188 with Archbishop Baldwin of Canterbury who was preaching the 3rd Crusade, may be read in a modern edition.
