CULTURAL ACTIVITIES
Festivals and events to enjoy
Throughout the year, you’ll find festivals and events to enjoy in Pembrokeshire. Some new and some traditional – such as the huge sandcastle building competition at Whitesands Bay. And some that recall events in the past such as the Rebecca Race held every August. It’s one of the toughest races in the Pembrokeshire, a five mile race – Ras Beca - over the Preselis – held to commemorate the Rebecca Riots which occurred in the area in the early 1840s.

Of course, some traditional events have fallen by the wayside.
On the sands of Treath Mawr (Newport sands) the ancient game of Cnapan used to be played involving up to 2000 players. That’s right, 2000! In fact, virtually the whole community of Newport and Nevern would often turn out to play. A handling and passing ballgame it has many similarities to a certain game invented at Rugby school in 1823, but as Cnapan aficionados will point out, it predates it by 400 years!
And one tradition that is thankfully doesn’t take place any more is the ancient custom of Holly Beating which used to take place in Tenby, on St Stephens Day and involved men and boys beating the bare arms of females with branches of holly!
Other notable festivals include Narberth Food Festival, Newport Bay Spring Festival, Tenby Arts Festival and St Dogmaels Art Festival.
